Brenden North is a Canadian artist who creates sculptures out of wooden canoes and light. When an accident shattered the right side of North’s skull, it was reconstructed with titanium. The artist’s very personal theme, Bone and Armor, resonates throughout his work, where one side of the piece shows the ribs/bone, while the other side is concealed. Old canoes are the perfect vessel for this artistry. Each unwanted canoe has a story to tell, and North gives it another life and purpose. The pieces are deconstructed according to a design influenced by whale skeletons, and light is used to bounce shadows through the structure to tell a story. The finished pieces combine nature, art and functional design in an organic and interesting way.
